Developer Guide: JWT Token Anatomy, Decoding, and Verification

Understand JSON Web Token structure (Header, Payload, Signature), common security pitfalls like algorithm confusion, and how to debug tokens in-browser.

JSON Web Tokens (JWTs) are the industry standard for stateless authorization in modern web and mobile apps. However, pasting production tokens into untrusted online debuggers can expose confidential claims and user identifiers.

Anatomy of a JWT

A JWT consists of three Base64URL-encoded strings separated by dots:

1. **Header**: Contains the signing algorithm (`HS256`, `RS256`) and token type.

2. **Payload**: Contains claims such as user ID, permissions, and expiry (`exp`).

3. **Signature**: Cryptographic hash verifying the token was not tampered with.

Why Use PolyForge JWT Debugger

PolyForge decodes and validates your tokens entirely via the browser WebCrypto API. Secret keys and production tokens are never logged or transmitted over any network.
